About Quinnipiac

Provost Debra J. Liebowitz, PhD

Provost Debra J. Liebowitz is an innovative leader with an impactful record of creating partnerships and launching initiatives that enable university growth, promote diversity, strengthen shared governance and immersive learning opportunities. She oversees all academic programs at Quinnipiac, the university’s eight schools and the College of Arts and Sciences and all other academic units and centers. She is also a professor of political science at Quinnipiac.

A Leader in Academic Innovation

Since joining Quinnipiac in 2020, Liebowitz has played a key role in earning Board of Trustees support for unprecedented investments in academic facilities and faculty hiring at the university. These initiatives include a new School of Business, an innovation, science and technology building and a strategic faculty hiring initiative to build distinctive academic offerings, promote interdisciplinary collaborations, advance the recruitment, retention and success of underrepresented faculty and students.

Both at Quinnipiac and at Drew University, where she previously served as provost and dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Caspersen School of Graduate Studies, Liebowitz has a long history of developing partnerships with industry, community organizations and other colleges and universities. She is currently leading the academic components of a unique university-wide strategic partnership between Quinnipiac and Hartford HealthCare that includes the development of and expansion of degree and certificate programs, research collaboration, internship, employment and clinical placement opportunities for students, leadership development programs for Hartford employees and innovative solutions to talent pipeline issues. She is also the PI on a U.S. Small Business Administration grant (2022-24) partnering with the Connecticut Community Outreach Revitalization Program (ConnCORP) to create an adult entrepreneurship academic program for minority, women and veteran small business owners.

She holds degrees in political science — an undergraduate degree from the University of Oregon and master’s and doctoral degrees from Rutgers University. Liebowitz earned the President’s Award for Distinguished Teaching and the Center for Civic Engagement’s Faculty Leadership Award while at Drew University. She currently serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Human Rights, published by Taylor and Francis; and is on the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Global Advisory Board of the Future Talent Council.
